Authorities in Ogun State have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Adaeze Jaja, a 400-level student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, who allegedly took her own life in a hotel room.
Confirming the heartbreaking incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, disclosed to reporters in Abeokuta on Tuesday that the 31-year-old student was discovered unconscious in the hotel room, with foam emanating from her mouth and an empty bottle of Sniper, a potent insecticide, found beside her.
According to Odutola, the distressing episode was reported to the Ago-Iwoye Divisional Police Officer on January 27 at 7:30 am by the hotel’s director, Oduniyi Adelaja.
Adelaja informed the police that one of his staff members, Adebayo Israel, discovered Adaeze lying unconscious and foaming at the mouth on a freezer in the hotel room at about 6 am that day.
Upon finding her, she was swiftly rushed to Best Care Hospital and later transferred to Love and Care Hospital in Ago-Iwoye, where she was tragically pronounced dead.
Following the report, law enforcement officers visited the scene of the incident and retrieved the empty Sniper bottle as evidence. Subsequently, the deceased student’s body was transported to the OOU Teaching Hospital mortuary for further examination through an autopsy.
The PPRO assured that the Divisional Crime Branch (DCB) had initiated an investigation into the matter, with the university authorities duly informed about the tragic event.
