Super Eagles dynamo Victor Osimhen faced a sudden setback just hours before Nigeria’s highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final showdown against South Africa. The 25-year-old forward, who has been a standout performer with one goal in five AFCON matches, experienced discomfort in his abdomen, prompting concern among team medics.
As the Nigerian squad embarked on their journey from Abidjan to Bouaké, Cote d’Ivoire for the crucial clash, Osimhen was notably absent from the travel roster due to his condition. However, the team assured fans that he is under careful observation, with a dedicated medical professional staying behind in Abidjan to monitor his progress.
In a statement shared on social media, the team disclosed, “Osimhen did not however make the trip as a result of an abdominal discomfort. Team medics confirmed that he has been placed under close watch with a member of the medical team staying behind in Abidjan with him. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5pm.”
Despite Osimhen’s absence, the Super Eagles remain focused on their upcoming clash against South Africa, scheduled for Wednesday evening. The team’s management expressed optimism that Osimhen could rejoin the squad swiftly if his condition improves by the following day.
Osimhen’s pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ journey to the semi-finals cannot be overstated, having been a consistent starter in every game of the tournament. Despite his solitary goal, his influence on the pitch has been instrumental in Nigeria’s progression.
Furthermore, Osimhen’s future in club football hangs in the balance as rumors swirl regarding a potential departure from Italian giants Napoli in the upcoming summer transfer window. As the reigning 2023 CAF African Player of the Year, his talent and potential have attracted attention from clubs across Europe, adding an extra layer of intrigue to his ongoing journey both on and off the field.
