Howard University in Washington, D.C. has taken decisive action, announcing the revocation of Sean Combs’ honorary degree, popularly known as Diddy, in response to a recently surfaced video deemed to contradict the university’s core principles.
A source previously reported the emergence of a video in May depicting Diddy engaging in physical altercation with his former girlfriend, Casandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura, back in 2016. Despite being a former student at Howard, Diddy left before completing his degree and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2014.
In a statement released on Friday, Howard University disclosed that its Board of Trustees unanimously voted to accept the return of the honorary degree granted to Diddy in 2014. This decision entails the removal of all honors and privileges associated with the degree, effectively scrubbing his name from records listing honorary degree recipients.
Furthermore, the university will sever ties with Diddy by terminating a 2016 gift agreement, dismantling the scholarship program established in his name, and refunding his $1 million contribution. The board also directed the immediate termination of a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.
According to the statement, Diddy’s conduct, as evidenced by the recently surfaced video, is deemed incompatible with Howard University’s fundamental values, rendering him unworthy of holding the institution’s highest honor. The university reaffirmed its steadfast opposition to all forms of interpersonal violence.
The board and university administration offered no further commentary on the matter, emphasizing their resolute stance against acts of violence and their commitment to upholding the integrity of Howard University’s values.
