Reports have emerged indicating the tragic loss of no fewer than 20 students in boarding schools across Fune, Potiskum, and Fika local government areas of Yobe state due to a suspected outbreak of Meningitis.
The fatalities occurred primarily in Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College in Potiskum LGA, as disclosed by sources within the affected communities. Most of the afflicted students received medical attention at the specialist hospital in Potiskum, where they are reportedly showing signs of improvement.
Confirming the outbreak, Muhammad Sani Idris, the state’s commissioner for basic and secondary education, stated that the suspected meningitis outbreak claimed the lives of 20 students. In response, Governor Mai Mala Buni has instructed the state’s Ministry of Education to temporarily relocate to Potiskum LG to address the situation effectively.
Idris further confirmed that numerous students were admitted to the Potiskum specialist hospital for treatment. Reflecting on the dire situation, he emphasized the necessity to combat the outbreak swiftly to prevent its spread to other areas.
