The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has swiftly moved to quash rumors circulating about an alleged coup plot in Nigeria, vehemently refuting claims that the Guards Brigade was placed on high alert.
In a resolute statement issued by the acting director of defence information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, on Monday, the DHQ categorically dismissed the allegations as baseless and malicious.
Contrary to reports circulating online, Brigadier General Gusau emphasized that there is no validity to the notion of a coup plot, denouncing the assertions as unfounded fabrications. He clarified that the Guards Brigade, entrusted with the paramount duty of safeguarding the seat of power, has always maintained a state of readiness commensurate with its responsibilities.
Addressing the purported emergency meeting involving President Bola Tinubu and high-ranking officials, the DHQ asserted that such claims are purely speculative and lack any factual basis.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the stability of the nation. General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, has consistently affirmed the military’s allegiance to democracy, dismissing any notion of interference in civilian affairs.
Condemning the propagation of false information, the DHQ called upon relevant security agencies to take decisive action against Sahara Reporters for disseminating baseless claims aimed at sowing discord and unrest. Additionally, the Defence Headquarters announced its intent to pursue legal recourse against the publication, underscoring the gravity of spreading misinformation that threatens national stability and unity.
