Defense Headquarters Confirms Death of 16 Soldiers in Delta State

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) revealed on Saturday that 16 valiant military personnel met their tragic end during a communal clash in Delta State. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, disclosed that the soldiers were ambushed by youths while responding to a distress call amidst a clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities in the state.

Among the fallen heroes were the commanding officer leading the reinforcement team, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers, highlighting the severity of the ambush.

In an official statement, Gusau recounted the harrowing events, stating, “The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, were on a peace mission to Okuama community when they were surrounded by community youths and mercilessly attacked on Thursday, 14 March 2024. This unfortunate incident unfolded as the troops answered a call for help amid the communal crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.”

He further mentioned that Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa had promptly ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the military’s unwavering commitment to peace and security in the nation.

While some suspects have been apprehended in connection with the tragic event, Gusau assured that the military is resolute in unraveling the motives behind the heinous attack and bringing all perpetrators to justice. Additionally, he affirmed that the matter has been reported to the Delta State Government, underscoring the collaborative efforts to address the unrest and restore calm to the affected communities.
