Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, tragically died in a helicopter crash alongside the group’s CEO, Herbert Wigwe, on February 9.
The ill-fated journey, operated by Orbic Air LLC, originated from Palm Springs Airport, California, with a destination set for Boulder City, Nevada. However, the flight ended in tragedy near the Nevada border.
Ogunbanjo, a scion of the esteemed Ogunbanjo family, followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a career in law. He earned his stripes, obtaining a B.Sc. (Hons) in business administration from the American College, Switzerland, and a law degree from the University of Buckingham, UK. Additionally, he acquired certifications in International Capital Markets and Maritime Law from renowned institutions.
Throughout his career, Ogunbanjo lent his expertise pro bono to entities like the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping and the Chris Ogunbanjo Foundation, where he also served on the board of directors. He further distinguished himself as the managing partner of Chris Ogunbanjo LP (Solicitors), a prominent corporate law firm.
His contributions extended beyond legal realms; he served on the boards of various multinational corporations and non-profit organizations, leaving an indelible mark on the corporate landscape. His commitment to excellence earned him accolades, including the traditional title of Bamofin of Erunwon Ijebu Kingdom and the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) conferred by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ogunbanjo’s legacy as a legal luminary and a beacon of service to Nigeria will endure, even as his untimely passing leaves a void in the hearts of many.
