Renowned sports journalist Kayode Tijani has bid farewell at the age of 55 after a prolonged illness, marking the end of an era in Nigerian sports reporting.
Sources close to the family confirmed the passing of Mr. Tijani, revealing that he breathed his last on Wednesday at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he battled an undisclosed ailment for the past five years.
As news of his demise reverberated, tributes poured in from colleagues and admirers alike, with former Super Eagles press officer Colin Udoh lamenting the loss of a cherished friend and colleague.
Born on July 7, 1968, Tijani carved out a distinguished career spanning over 29 years, leaving an indelible mark as both a print and broadcast journalist.
Graduating with honors from the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in 1989, Tijani swiftly ascended the ranks, assuming the role of editor at FAME magazine at a youthful age of 24.
His journalistic journey led him to prominent media outlets such as Guardian Nigeria, Complete Sports, and Africa Soccer, where his insightful reporting earned him widespread acclaim.
Tijani’s multifaceted career also saw him making significant contributions to radio and television, gracing the airwaves of Raypower FM, MITV, and the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), before briefly venturing into the UK media landscape with BEN TV.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Tijani’s personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. He tied the knot with his college sweetheart, Shade, over two decades ago, and their union blessed them with three beloved sons.
In accordance with Islamic customs, Tijani’s final rites will be observed with a burial ceremony scheduled for 2 pm on Thursday at the Atan Cemetery in Lagos, marking the end of a remarkable journey and the beginning of his eternal rest.
