The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State found itself in disarray as chaos erupted with the declaration of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu as the winner of a parallel PDP governorship primary.
In a video circulating on X, an unidentified individual proclaimed Shaibu as the victor of the primary.
“After tallying the votes in this primary election, Philip Shaibu has garnered a total of 301 votes. Thus, we officially declare Mr. Shaibu as the duly elected candidate for the PDP in this election,” the announcer declared.
Shaibu, surrounded by jubilant supporters, embraced the moment and exchanged warm greetings with his well-wishers.
Reportedly, Shaibu was the sole aspirant from the PDP to receive votes at the venue.
Meanwhile, the faction aligned with Governor Godwin Obaseki had yet to commence its primary proceedings.
Obaseki is speculated to be endorsing Asue Ighodalo as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in September.
The rift between Shaibu and the governor stems from Shaibu’s aspirations to succeed Obaseki as the state’s governor.
