On Monday, Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, defended the salaries of federal lawmakers, asserting that their current compensation is insufficient to support the demands of their elected roles.

Appearing on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today,’ Kalu emphasized that the perceived lavishness of lawmakers’ salaries is misconstrued, clarifying that their allowances are designated for executing the duties mandated by their constituents.

“Let’s talk about the salaries of the National Assembly. It’s not as extravagant as people assume. Allowances are separate and earmarked for specific tasks. Misusing them carries consequences,” Kalu explained, highlighting the critical role these funds play in lawmakers’ constituency work.

He continued, “Considering the costs involved in transport, maintaining constituency offices, and supporting aides to fulfill their mandates, slashing salaries won’t address our challenges. Lawmakers are open to adjustments, but it’s vital to recognize the economic realities we face.”

“In acknowledging the President’s commitment to reducing governance costs, his endorsement of the Oronsaye report is commendable. We will leverage these recommendations for our ongoing Constitution review,” Kalu remarked, underscoring Tinubu’s foresight in addressing Nigeria’s challenges amidst current adversities.

By embracing cost-cutting measures, Kalu affirmed, Tinubu demonstrates a genuine concern for Nigeria’s welfare, a crucial step in navigating the nation through its myriad challenges.
