Singer Inetimi Timaya Odon, popularly known as Timaya, has opened up about his arduous battle with drug addiction, revealing that breaking free from its grip was a daunting struggle.
In a candid interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, the 43-year-old music icon shared the challenges he faced while attempting to overcome his addiction, describing it as a “tough fight.”
Timaya disclosed that his journey into drug use began during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when he was introduced to drugs by young individuals in his household.
Reflecting on his experience, he expressed astonishment at how drugs initially made him feel immensely euphoric, leading him to chase that feeling relentlessly.
He recalled, “When I took it, I did not understand myself. I was so happy that I dashed all the money in my pocket. So I wanted to just keep feeling like that. That was how I lost a lot of weight. I was not eating, I was just happy.”
Timaya emphasized the dangerous cycle of dependency that ensued, where he found himself relying on substances to attain happiness, replacing natural joy with artificial euphoria.
Opening up further, he admitted to regularly consuming multiple pills of molly each day, likening it to medication, albeit one that had taken over his life.
Now, Timaya’s candid revelation serves as a testament to the resilience required to confront and overcome addiction, offering hope and encouragement to others battling similar challenges.
