In a surprise move just hours before its official inauguration, the Federal Government has decided to rename the Minna Airport in Niger State after President Bola Tinubu, adding a touch of presidential prestige to the grand unveiling event scheduled for Monday.
Previously named after the late Abubakar Imam by the FG as part of a series of airport renamings honoring prominent figures in Nigeria, the airport’s renaming reflects a shift in recognition towards one of Nigeria’s most influential political leaders.
This exciting development was revealed by the state Commissioner for Information, Binta Mamman, during a media briefing at the Government House in Minna. Mamman also unveiled the elaborate preparations underway for President Tinubu’s visit, which includes inaugurating the newly remodelled and upgraded terminal at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport.
Originally initiated as a federal project, the remodelling of the airport faced delays, prompting the state government to step in and take charge to ensure its timely completion. Mamman emphasized that the revamped airport is poised to serve as a viable alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, given the state’s strategic proximity to the nation’s capital.
In a nod to President Tinubu’s unwavering support for the state, the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Aminu Takuma, explained that the decision to rename the airport was a fitting tribute to the President’s contributions. Takuma clarified that the renaming was within the FG’s purview, given its initial decision to name the airport.
Additionally, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Musa Salihu, announced the inauguration of state-of-the-art agricultural mechanization equipment aimed at bolstering food security initiatives. These cutting-edge tools, including tractors, power tillers, planters, and harvesters, will be showcased at the Airport City Free Agro Processing Zone, symbolizing the state’s commitment to agricultural advancement.
With Governor Mohammed Bago’s administration spearheading agricultural development efforts, Niger State is poised to emerge as Nigeria’s foremost agricultural hub, offering boundless opportunities for growth and prosperity.
