Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has revealed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has summoned him for questioning regarding a viral video allegedly exposing extortion at a police checkpoint in Lagos.
The Ondo-born politician, who ran under the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 general elections, raised concerns about a potential arrest and prosecution. According to Sowore, police authorities are reportedly preparing charges against him for sharing the controversial footage on social media.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Sowore wrote, “I have just concluded a conversation with a senior Nigeria Police Force officer in Abuja, who requested my presence for questioning regarding an extortion video I recorded at a police ‘checkpoint’ in Lagos. This video led to a police manhunt for me. The officer informed me that the ‘charges’ are not yet prepared. I am still awaiting.”
Sowore, an outspoken critic of systemic corruption, claims the video highlights entrenched issues of extortion within police operations.
The activist also posted images of himself with his lawyer, Dele Adeyanju, as he prepares to respond to the police inquiry.
As of the time of filing this report, the NPF has not issued an official statement regarding the summons or the viral video. YEPS will continue to monitor developments on this story.
