Son standing trial for the alleged murder of his father in Plateau State

Plateau State was shaken by a tragic incident as Joseph Yakubu, a 29-year-old man from the Anglo-Jos community, was arrested for the gruesome murder of his own father, Yakubu Dalyop. The heinous act occurred during a disagreement when Yakubu, in a fit of rage, struck his father unconscious with a pounding pestle, ultimately leading to his demise.

The distressing incident came to light on February 20, 2024, when concerned citizens alerted the Anglo-Jos division of the Plateau State Police Command. According to reports, the altercation between father and son transpired on February 15, 2024, at around 8 pm. Subsequently, the elder Dalyop was rushed to Plateau State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical intervention. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on February 19, 2024, at approximately 1 pm.

Addressing the media during the parade of suspects at the Command’s headquarters in Jos, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Yabanet, expressed deep concern over the incident. He disclosed that Joseph Yakubu had been apprehended while his father’s remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary. The Commissioner assured the public that the case was under thorough investigation, affirming that Yakubu would face the full force of the law once the investigation was concluded.

Furthermore, Commissioner Yabanet emphasized the implementation of new operational strategies to combat criminal activities in the state. Within a short period since assuming office, these strategies had already led to the successful apprehension of numerous criminals involved in various offenses, including kidnapping and culpable homicide. The Commissioner reassured the citizens of Plateau State of the Command’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Commissioner Yabanet acknowledged the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, for the resources provided to enhance the Command’s operations. He also lauded the efforts of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the collaboration between the police and other security agencies in the state.

Amidst the tragedy, the Plateau State Police Command remained resolute in its mission to uphold law and order, promising justice for the victims and their families while urging the community’s continued cooperation in the fight against crime.
