Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District, expressed concern over the closure of the Nigeria/Niger Republic border, emphasizing that it is causing significant hardship and business losses for Nigerians. In an interview with Arise News Television on Tuesday, Senator Aliero argued that the border closure has led to widespread unemployment and strained relations between Niger Republic and Nigeria.
He highlighted that the impact of the closure extends beyond Kano, affecting states like Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and to some extent, Kaduna, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno. Senator Aliero urged legislators from these states to appeal to the federal government to promptly reopen the border, emphasizing the economic distortions and increased poverty resulting from the closure.
Emphasizing the historical ties between Niger and Nigeria, Senator Aliero underscored their strong alliance, rooted in shared religion, culture, and intermarriages. He questioned the sense in enforcing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ban on trade between the two nations, given their interconnectedness.
Describing the border closure as “unwarranted and unnecessary,” Senator Aliero highlighted the hardships faced by the people, with approximately 500 truckloads of goods stranded at the border. He pointed out that these goods originate not only from Niger but also from other West African countries, causing significant losses for businessmen.
