The Anambra State Police Command has conducted a significant raid on a camp affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area.
State police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga announced on Tuesday that four suspects were apprehended during the operation. This raid was part of a coordinated effort by a police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata, acting on intelligence about imminent attacks planned by the group against security personnel and civilians.
Ikenga detailed, “On June 17, 2024, the Police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata intercepted four suspected ESN militia in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State. This follows ongoing intelligence regarding the group’s plans to target security agents and innocent citizens.”
One of the suspects, identified as Maduabuchi Nwafor, also known as Omenkpo, a 32-year-old native of Ufuma, is reportedly a native doctor for the group. Nwafor is said to prepare charms for the militia and use his shrine for initiation rites and meetings.
Another suspect, whose name has been withheld, is cooperating with the authorities. He admitted to being one of the gunmen tasked with enforcing the illegal sit-at-home order on May 30, 2024.
Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Itam has mandated an extensive investigation to uncover more hideouts and operatives of the insurgents aiming to destabilize the state. “The CP assures Ndi Anambra that the police command will continue to serve the community diligently, protecting informers to ensure their safety,” Ikenga added.
