Plateau State has scheduled local government elections for October 9, 2024.
Plangji Cishak, Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting with political party leaders at the commission’s headquarters in Jos.
Cishak stated that the elections will be conducted across the 17 local government areas of the state, which are currently managed by Transition Implementation Committee Chairmen.
Highlighting the significance of the upcoming elections, Cishak said, “Today, we engage in one of the most critical activities empowered to us: the management of elections. It is crucial at this juncture to issue the notice of election for 2024.”
Citing various legal provisions, including Section 64 of the Local Government Elections in Plateau and the Electoral Act 2022, Cishak announced, “The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission notifies all political parties and the public that elections will be held in the 17 Local Government Councils of Plateau State on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.”
Prospective candidates are to obtain nomination forms for the positions of Chairmen and Councillors of the 17 Local Government Councils at PLASIEC Headquarters from August 1 to August 5, 2024, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.
Campaign activities for political parties will commence on July 12, 2024, with party primaries and dispute resolutions scheduled between July 29 and August 8, 2024.
Cishak added, “Collection of Nomination Forms for Candidates by Political Parties will be from August 9 to August 13, 2024. Submission of Nomination Forms for Candidates by Political Parties is from August 14 to August 19, 2024. The last day for campaigns by political parties is October 7, 2024, until midnight. Any run-off or supplementary election will be held on October 12, 2024.”
The chairman urged all political parties and stakeholders to support PLASIEC in organizing, conducting, and supervising a free, fair, credible, and transparent local government council election in Plateau State.
