Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed deep concern over the pervasive corruption in Nigeria. Speaking at the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University in Lagos on Saturday, he emphasized that corruption is not limited to certain groups but is widespread among both government officials and citizens.

Delivering his keynote address at the event themed “Lead the Change; Ignite Your Future,” Obi remarked, “Don’t think when we talk about vices it is only Yahoo boys. There are actually more Yahoo people in government than outside because we have turned the entire country into a crime scene where people inside are stealing, and people outside are stealing.”

He highlighted the failure of both past and present generations to address the issue effectively, adding that the burden now falls on the youth to lead the change.

“You are victims of Nigeria because my generation and the one before failed to do what was right, and you are suffering for it. Use the knowledge you have gained to help us rebuild society,” he added.

The former governor also called for the establishment of more online universities to address the growing demand for higher education. Drawing comparisons with countries like Pakistan, India, Turkey, and Bangladesh, which host online institutions with millions of students, he emphasized the importance of education in driving national development.

“Massively educating our people is crucial because education is one of the most vital tools for progress,” Obi stated.

Former Minister of Education, Obi Ezekwesili, also addressed the graduates, urging them to embrace service as the highest form of leadership. “We hope you see graduation as an opportunity to serve your country. The world of work you are entering is different from ours; you must master this new environment,” she advised.

Fadl Al Tarzi, the founder of Nexford University, highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the ceremony. With over 1,200 students earning undergraduate and Master’s degrees, Al Tarzi underscored the importance of integrating AI into education and the workforce.

“We have incorporated AI specialisation into all our programmes for nearly five years. While AI can significantly boost productivity and accelerate research, it will also displace jobs. Its development must be strategically managed to maximise its benefits,” he said.
