Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has addressed the appointment of his son, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, as a commissioner in Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole clarified that Cyril’s selection was based on merit and qualifications, not family ties.

“He doesn’t work under me,” Oshiomhole remarked. “Perhaps Governor Monday is grooming him. When Cyril wanted to contest for the House of Representatives while I was in office, I stopped him and supported someone else. This time, the governor decided to appoint him, and he is qualified for the role.”

Oshiomhole admitted he initially had concerns about the public perception of the appointment, saying, “I called Cyril and expressed my concerns. I also shared these concerns with the governor because people might raise questions. However, I have to acknowledge that at this stage, Cyril is an adult, and his decisions are his own.”

Highlighting his son’s credentials, Oshiomhole emphasized the investment he made in his children’s education. “Dr. Cyril is not just a medical doctor from Ahmadu Bello University; he also completed post-graduate studies at two prestigious U.S. universities, including Harvard and another in Louisiana, specializing in public health. He earned this role because of his qualifications, not because he is my son.”

He concluded, “I would argue he’s achieved this in spite of being an Oshiomhole, not because of it.”
