The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to visit the rehabilitated Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.
This invitation follows Obasanjo’s comments expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of the $2 billion investment in the refineries. During a recent interview on Channels Television, the former president questioned the viability of the refineries, saying, “I was told not too long ago that more than $2 billion had been spent on the refinery, and they still don’t work.”
He further added, “If anyone claims it’s working now, why are they still collaborating with Aliko Dangote? Aliko will not only make his refinery function, but it will also deliver results.”
In response, NNPCL issued a statement through its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, expressing high regard for Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and respecting his observations. The statement reads, “We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest esteem as a statesman, and we value his insights. However, it is important to note that NNPC has undergone a significant transformation.”
The company extended an invitation to Obasanjo to witness this transformation firsthand by visiting the rehabilitated refineries. “His wisdom and guidance would be invaluable, and we would be honored to have him join us on this historic journey,” the statement said.
NNPCL assured that the recent refurbishments are not merely typical Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) but a comprehensive overhaul aimed at achieving world-class standards. Similar upgrades are being carried out at the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries, with a focus on sustainable operation and global competitiveness.
The statement highlighted that these efforts are driven by the visionary leadership of the NNPCL board and management, led by GCEO Mele Kyari, in collaboration with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative policies in the energy sector. Together, they are paving the way for a more secure and prosperous energy future for Nigeria.
