The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off the nationwide protest scheduled for Wednesday, following a day of widespread demonstrations across the country.
Amid chants and placard-waving, protesters expressed their grievances over the soaring cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and overall hardship in Nigeria. Messages such as #End Poverty and Hunger, Support Local Industries# and Fix Local Refineries End Subsidy# resonated through the crowds.
The climax of the protest was a visit to the National Assembly, where NLC President Joe Ajaero submitted a letter outlining the demands to President Bola Tinubu through the Assembly’s leadership.
However, after a National Executive Council meeting, the NLC issued a communique expressing satisfaction with the impact of the protests. They believed the message was effectively conveyed to the government.
The communique, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Ismail Bello, praised Nigerians for their participation and resolve. It acknowledged the strong message sent to the authorities regarding the hardships faced by citizens.
While suspending the street action for the second day of the protest, the NLC extended a fresh 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding full implementation of agreements made on October 2, 2023. This ultimatum, expiring on March 13, aims to push the government to address the concerns raised during the protests.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses, promising to decide on further actions if the government fails to comply with the ultimatum.
