A Nigerian-American woman, Victoria Ogunremi, has demonstrated remarkable integrity by returning $5,700 she discovered in a restroom at her workplace in New Jersey, USA.

Her act of honesty has been celebrated widely, with many Nigerians abroad commending it as an extraordinary gesture of kindness and moral uprightness.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a phone interview on Monday, Ogunremi revealed that her decision to return the money was driven by empathy for the person who had misplaced it.

“The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me,” she said. “I didn’t hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is the key virtue I cherish.”

Ogunremi explained that she first located the money’s owner before informing her workplace’s management. Her actions earned her admiration and commendations from colleagues, management, and the grateful owner.

“The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praise,” she recounted. “They said it was only someone with the fear of God who could do something like this.”

Reflecting on her upbringing, Ogunremi credited her late father for instilling strong moral values. “He taught us never to take what does not belong to us,” she said. “These principles have guided me throughout my life, and I hope to pass them on to my children and grandchildren.”

She emphasized the importance of doing the right thing, regardless of whether anyone is watching. “A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden.
