The national grid suffered yet another system collapse on Wednesday, leaving many Nigerians without power, YEPS News has gathered.
Reports indicate that the grid lost power generation shortly after 11 a.m., causing widespread blackouts.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ndidi Mbah, for comments were unsuccessful, as she stated she was attending an event. However, sources within power generation companies confirmed to YEPS News that there was a major grid disturbance in the morning.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that there was a sudden trip-off, leading to a complete power outage before noon. At the time of the collapse, the grid was generating 4,064 megawatts at 11 a.m., but this figure plunged to 1,203 MW by 12 p.m. and eventually hit zero at 1 p.m.
This marks the first grid collapse in 2025, following a line-tripping incident in January. In 2024 alone, the national grid collapsed 12 times, while over the past decade, it has failed more than 100 times.
Confirming the development, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
**“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
While gradual restoration has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”**
The latest collapse raises fresh concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with stakeholders calling for urgent reforms to prevent recurring failures. YEPS News will continue to monitor developments.
