On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress took decisive action, closing the gates of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in Ilorin, Kwara State, demanding the reversal of the recently imposed electricity tariffs.

Labour Union members arrived early at the IBEDC offices in Challenge and Baboko market areas, sealing the gates and obstructing entry for workers and customers alike. Despite a few IBEDC staff lingering nearby, access to the premises was restricted by the determined labour unions.

Comrade Muritala Olayinka, Chairman of NLC in Kwara state, affirmed that their actions were in line with directives from the national Secretariat of the NLC. He emphasized that the IBEDC offices would remain shuttered until further notice from the NLC Secretariat in Abuja.

“The National Secretariat of NLC instructed that the picketing is for today, but we will consult with NLC leadership to determine if it will continue,” Olayinka stated.

This move came after the labour unions issued an ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), demanding the withdrawal of the recent tariff hike by May 12, 2024, or face unprecedented industrial action. The ultimatum, conveyed in a joint letter to the Chairman/CEO, was dated May 3, 2024, and copied to key government officials and electricity distribution companies.
