– Kuti Retains Title at ATTD Tournament, Ajetunmobi Calls for Increased Support
Matthew Kuti successfully defended his title at the 2nd African Table Tennis in Diaspora (ATTD) Tournament, defeating Basit Abdufatai in a thrilling men’s singles final at the Ibadan Recreation Club. Kuti, Nigeria’s top-ranked player, secured a N300,000 prize for his victory, while Abdufatai received N200,000 for his runner-up finish.
Sultan Agunbiade was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, despite his early exit in the Round of 16.
Tournament organizer Wale Ajetunmobi expressed satisfaction with the event, praising both the players and the generous sponsors. “The competition was a resounding success,” Ajetunmobi stated. “The players were highly competitive, and the sponsors’ support was invaluable. In fact, we believe this was the best ATTD tournament yet.”
Looking ahead, Ajetunmobi called for increased investment in young players. “We currently cater to 32 players, but there are many talented individuals who deserve this opportunity,” he said. “We also aim to expand the tournament to include female players in the future.”
The ATTD expressed its gratitude to key figures, including the Ibadan Recreation Club, ITTF President Wahid Oshodi, NTTF Vice President Tayo Adesoji, and retired legend Segun Toriola.
Charles Olayinka, ATTD President Emeritus, emphasized the organization’s commitment to nurturing future stars. “Our vision is to cultivate the next generation of Aruna Quadris and Segun Toriolas for Nigeria,” Olayinka stated. “We are expanding our reach across Africa to identify and support promising young talent.”
The tournament, livestreamed on the ATTD YouTube channel, showcased the exceptional talent within the African diaspora. Olayinka extended his sincere thanks to all sponsors, including Tes Iloh, Azuka Okunleye, Charles Ariyibi, and Emmanuel Tuglo.
