The Kano State Government has announced plans to compile data on foreign nationals conducting business in the state as part of a broader effort to protect local enterprises from being overshadowed by foreign competition.
This initiative was disclosed on Thursday by the Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry, Shehu Sagagi, during a press briefing in Kano.
Protecting Indigenous Businesses
Sagagi outlined the ministry’s plan to monitor the activities of foreign traders in Kano to safeguard small-scale enterprises run by local residents.
“The ministry is working on gathering data on foreigners doing business in Kano to ensure they do not overpower local businesses. This step is necessary to protect our indigenous entrepreneurs,” he said.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that companies operating in the state hire local residents and fulfill their corporate social responsibilities.
“It is critical that small businesses, which are vital for the livelihood of our people, are not overtaken by external players. The government must act decisively to address this growing concern,” Sagagi added.
Boosting Youth Employment and Trade Hubs
The commissioner also revealed plans to create training programs in the garment industry, equipping youths with skills to become self-employed and potentially employers of labour.
He highlighted the government’s strategy to establish business clusters as trade hubs, which are expected to thrive with adequate support and investment.
Governor Abba Yusuf has approved the refurbishment of the state’s Garment Industries, originally initiated by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, as part of efforts to revamp Kano’s economy.
Sagagi further disclosed plans for a programme aimed at empowering over 600 youths in each local government area of the state.
Collaborative Efforts for Economic Growth
The commissioner emphasized collaboration with other government ministries, particularly Agriculture and Land, to ensure businesses have access to necessary resources.
“The ministry is also partnering with the Ministry of Environment to improve market cleanliness and create an environment appealing to investors,” he noted.
Additionally, Sagagi announced plans to revive cooperative shops that will provide citizens with essential commodities at affordable prices, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Kano residents.
A Thriving Economic Vision
These initiatives align with the Kano State Government’s agenda to foster economic growth, empower youths, and create a thriving business environment. Sagagi assured that the administration remains focused on practical economic interventions to benefit Kano’s residents and ensure the prosperity of local enterprises.
