Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has expressed heartfelt apologies to Nigerians following the team’s defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday night.
Despite Nwabali, 27, showcasing his skills with a couple of crucial saves during the match, the Eagles succumbed to a 2-1 loss against the Elephants at the Alassane Quattara Olympic Stadium in Abidjan. Goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller secured the trophy for the host nation.
Taking to social media, Nwabali shared photos of himself visibly distraught, shedding tears after the game, and took responsibility for the team’s defeat.
In a heartfelt message, he wrote, “A disappointing and frustrating end. I deeply apologize to Nigerians. I was once a fan, still a fan, and I understand how it feels to have a disappointing night.
“We take full responsibility. Thanks for the whole support until the end. I love you all.”
Nwabali’s sincere apology reflects the team’s acknowledgment of their performance and their gratitude for the unwavering support of the Nigerian fans.
Nwabali, representing Chippa United in South Africa, narrowly missed out on clinching the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade, with the honor instead going to South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
