Former deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos State, Islamiyat Oyefusi, has announced her departure from the party, citing a misalignment of values as the reason for her decision.
Oyefusi, who ran alongside Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour in the 2023 governorship election ultimately won by the incumbent Babajide Sanwo-Olu, conveyed her decision in a letter dated February 22, 2024. Addressed to the party’s chairman in Isele 1 ward of Ikorodu, her letter expressed her resignation from the Labour Party.
In her letter, Oyefusi stated, “I can no longer see myself aligning with the current values of the Labour Party or as a member of the Labour Party, and the time has come for me to move forward.”
Acknowledging her political journey over the past 10 months, Oyefusi expressed gratitude to the Almighty for her health and for guiding her. She also thanked her team, supporters, and the ObiDatti family and NCF for their unwavering support during the 2023 electioneering period.
Her departure from the Labour Party marks a significant shift in her political trajectory, having previously been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). As she embarks on this new chapter, Oyefusi remains grateful for the experiences and opportunities afforded to her during her time with the Labour Party.
