Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma has declared that Africa is rich in natural resources capable of feeding the world. He highlighted that the continent boasts over 30 mineral deposits, fertile lands, and other resources that could lead to self-sufficiency.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Rochas Foundation to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child in Abuja, Koroma emphasized that these resources alone are insufficient. He urged the youth to become “meaningful citizens” of their nations and of Africa as a whole.

“We have everything imaginable in Africa,” he said. “With more than 30% of the world’s mineral deposits and abundant land, we have the potential to feed the globe for generations. But achieving this requires you to engage actively as responsible citizens of your countries and as committed Africans.”

Koroma expressed his optimism for the future, stating that the continent’s destiny hinges on the youth. “I am inspired by what I see. We must all dedicate ourselves to supporting you in this vital journey of personal and collective transformation,” he added.

Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo State and founder of the Rochas Foundation, also addressed the gathering, highlighting that 70% of Nigeria’s out-of-school children are girls. He attributed this alarming statistic to cultural barriers that restrict girls’ access to education.

“With over 13 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, it is a tragedy that 70% of them are girls,” Okorocha remarked. “Cultural norms often prevent these children from realizing their potential. Education is a right for every child; denying them this right compromises their future.”

To combat this educational crisis, Okorocha advocated for free education and increased community volunteerism. He expressed his belief in the goodwill of Nigerians and called on the government to foster initiatives that support education.
