FG allocates N452 billion for road and water projects

The Federal Government on Tuesday approved 14 major road projects worth N249.15bn across the country, as part of the Renewed Hope Administration’s ongoing review and restructuring of inherited infrastructure initiatives.

Speaking after the 23rd Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced that the projects span multiple states and are strategically designed to enhance connectivity nationwide.

Report gathered by YEPS News reveals that in Niger State, the Agaie–Katcha–Baro Road will be executed by Messrs GR Building Construction Limited for N22bn. Similarly, in Cross River State, Samatech secured a N26.335bn contract to rehabilitate the Odukpani Junction and the central section of the Calabar–Ikom–Ogoja Road.

Additional approvals include N10.89bn for the Ajaokuta–Ajibo/Iyana-Mosa Road in Ogun State, awarded to Messrs HM Construction Limited, and N9.33bn for the Inoma–Iyaka–Abaji section of the Ibaji–Odulu–Ajibu Road in Anambra State, to be handled by Niger Cat.

Umahi further noted, “The next project is the construction at Umuahia Ituano-Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia Emudike, to be executed by Messrs Heartland Reckon Construction Company at a cost of N14.37bn.

“The Kaduna–Jos Road (Phase 1), covering parts of Kaduna and Plateau states, has been awarded to Setraco for N33.42bn. The Yola-Fufure Road in Adamawa State will be handled by WisChina Worldwide Engineering Limited for N11.81bn.”

Report gathered by YEPS News confirms that in Ogun State, Aretha Construction Limited has been awarded a N13bn contract for the Ijebu–Ibutita–Ebe Road.

Other key approvals include:

  • N7.68bn for Amido Road in Taraba State, awarded to Messer Mode Limited.
  • N14.49bn for the Nkomoro–Isu Road (Enugu and Ebonyi States), awarded to Arab Contractors.
  • N11.55bn for the dualisation of the Ikot Ekpene Border/Aba–Owerri Road, also awarded to Arab Contractors.
  • N9.68bn for the Gashua–Bayamari Road (Section 2) in Yobe State, to be handled by Messrs Wick Rock.
  • N27.59bn for Phase 1 of the Ikorodu–Shagamu Road, connecting to the larger Lagos–Ibadan Road network, awarded to Arab Contractors.

Providing an update on the Lagos–Ibadan Road project, Umahi disclosed that Messrs Reynolds Construction Company requires an additional N30bn to complete an 8.55km stretch on the Lagos-bound section.

“You know, there were two phases. The first section is being completed by Julius Berger, and the second by RCC. However, RCC has yet to finish the Ibadan-bound section, and about N4bn is required to finalize that part,” he stated.

Additionally, YEPS News gathered that the FEC approved a N7bn rescoping plan for the AK Bypass, to be handled by Ghitto Construction Limited.

Meanwhile, the Council stepped down a memo concerning the construction of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) headquarters, requesting further research and modifications before reconsideration.

“The FEC stepped down one memo regarding the FERMA headquarters. The Council questioned why, since its establishment in 2002, FERMA has never had a dedicated headquarters. We have been asked to conduct further research and resubmit,” Umahi explained.

For her part, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, announced the approval of six key infrastructure and water supply projects aimed at enhancing living conditions in Abuja and its environs.

According to Mahmoud, the first project approved involves constructing an access road to the FCT Fire Service Institution and implementing erosion control measures in Kaura District. The contract, awarded to Mssrs Infu Ernest International Ltd, is valued at N13.18bn and is scheduled for completion in 18 months.

A second memo revised the estimate for engineering infrastructure in Guzape District (Lot 1), raising the initial contract sum from N22.2bn to N70.89bn, with an additional 18-month completion period.

“The third project approved is the provision of an access road bypassing the airport’s second railway from Clinton Drive to Tunga Madaki settlement, including a full-span bridge. The 7km project, awarded to Mssrs CCECC, is valued at N27.6bn and is expected to be completed in 12 months,” Mahmoud added.

Furthermore, the Council approved the rehabilitation and resurfacing of key roads, including Yakubu Gowon Crescent leading to the Presidential Villa, Thomas Sankara Road, J.F. Kennedy Street, Ibrahim Taiwo Street, Muhammadu Ribadu Street, and Shehu Shagari Way (spanning from N13 OX junction to Maitama Roundabout). Julius Berger secured the N20.4bn contract, with an estimated completion time of eight months.

Additionally, the Council approved a N54.38bn contract to finalize infrastructure in Guzape (Lots 1 and 2), to be executed by Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company over 18 months.

YEPS News reports that a N17.2bn and $79,000 contract was also awarded to SCC Nigeria Ltd for rehabilitating Phases one, three, and four of the Lower Usuma Dam water treatment plants. The Minister emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure a stable water supply and is set for completion within 12 months.

Tuesday’s meeting was the second within two days, with council members considering a total of 101 memos across both sittings.
