French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot issued a stern warning on Monday, stating that the European Union would match any tariffs imposed by the United States, signaling a potential trade standoff between the two economic powers.
“There is no hesitation when it comes to defending our interests,” Barrot emphasized in an interview with TF1, as gathered by YEPS News. His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that Washington would impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports this week.
When asked whether France and the EU would counter Trump’s move, Barrot responded unequivocally: “Of course. This is not unexpected. Trump did the same in 2018 during his first term. At that time, we responded in kind—and we will do so again.”
Pressed on what retaliatory measures might be implemented, Barrot explained that the European Commission would determine which sectors would be targeted.
“No one benefits from a trade war with the European Union,” he cautioned, hinting at potential economic repercussions.
Rising Trade Tensions
According to reports gathered by YEPS News, the new tariffs on steel and aluminum are part of a broader series of trade restrictions introduced by the U.S. administration, heightening concerns of a looming global trade conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to CNN, downplayed the EU’s role in Washington’s trade strategy and urged the U.S. to shift its focus elsewhere.
“Is the European Union really your biggest issue? No, I don’t think so. Your primary challenge is China, so you should concentrate on that first,” Macron stated, adding that the EU must be prepared to respond decisively to U.S. policies.
As tensions escalate, European leaders are bracing for economic turbulence, with Brussels expected to announce countermeasures in the coming days.
