The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has issued a public advisory, urging customers to remain vigilant against the growing menace of cyber threats.

In a statement signed by Babatunde Lasaki, EKEDC’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, the company highlighted the increasing reliance on digital platforms for transactions as a key reason cybercriminals are using sophisticated methods to exploit vulnerabilities, underscoring the importance of cybersecurity awareness for all.

Lasaki identified common cyber risks such as phishing scams, social engineering attacks, ransomware, and identity theft, emphasizing the need for customers to recognize and handle these threats effectively. He explained that fraudsters often employ deceptive emails, texts, or calls to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information like passwords, account details, or payment data.

He further noted that cybercriminals often impersonate EKEDC officials or pose as distressed family members to manipulate victims into divulging confidential details or making financial transactions. On ransomware, Lasaki warned that attackers use malicious software to block access to files or devices, demanding a ransom for restoration—a threat often triggered when users download infected files or click malicious links.

“Attackers steal personal information such as National Identification Numbers, bank details, or passwords to impersonate victims for fraudulent purposes. Weak or reused passwords across accounts also make it easier for hackers to gain unauthorized access,” he added.

To combat these risks, EKEDC encouraged customers to adopt strong cybersecurity practices, including verifying the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from EKEDC. Lasaki emphasized that EKEDC will never request sensitive details like passwords or PINs in its official communications.

He also advised customers to create strong, unique passwords, avoid predictable combinations like names or birthdays, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for added security. Keeping devices updated, steering clear of public Wi-Fi for transactions, and avoiding unknown links or unsolicited attachments were also recommended.
