The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, urged the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to devise effective strategies to combat corruption and enhance governance at the grassroots level.
Addressing participants at the “War Against Corruption at Grassroots” workshop in Abuja, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in local government administration. Represented by Mohammed Hammajoda, the Secretary to the Commission, Olukoyede urged attendees to collaborate in formulating initiatives to bolster the fight against corruption.
“As we engage in discussions over the next few days, let’s pool our wisdom, experiences, and insights to develop strategies that strengthen anti-corruption efforts and promote transparency in local governance,” Olukoyede stated.
He emphasized the need for significant improvements in grassroots governance, stressing that only concerted anti-corruption measures could bring about positive change for Nigerians.
In his remarks, the Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees, Odunayo Ategbero, advocated for a bottom-up approach to combat corruption, highlighting the crucial role of local governments in preventive measures.
“The fight against corruption requires a collective effort from all segments of society. This workshop serves as a platform to raise awareness and address corruption head-on,” Ategbero affirmed.
He called on the EFCC to intensify anti-corruption efforts across all levels of governance in Nigeria.
Similarly, the Minister for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Zaphaniah Jisalo, lauded the collaborative efforts of the EFCC and ALGON in organizing the workshop. He encouraged robust discussions and urged participants to implement resolutions effectively.
The two-day workshop, targeting various local government officials, aims to mobilize and sensitize participants toward accountable and prudent management of resources at the grassroots level.
