All preparations are in place as Abakaliki Football Club, Ebonyi State’s newly-acquired team, takes on Madiba FC of Lagos in the opening fixture of the 2024-25 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
The highly anticipated match is scheduled for Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki, marking the only fixture slated for this weekend.
Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Richard Idike, highlighted that acquiring Abakaliki Football Club represents a major step in the State Government’s efforts to rejuvenate sporting activities. Addressing members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Idike lamented the state’s 17-year absence from professional football, which he said led to a decline in other sports.
He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for his commitment to revitalizing sports and youth development, expressing confidence in the team’s chances of success. Idike revealed that the squad, backed by a motivated coaching crew, has been rigorously preparing for the new season.
“All necessary arrangements have been finalized to ensure a smooth and successful game,” he said, adding that Governor Nwifuru will join enthusiastic supporters at the stadium to cheer the team.
Meanwhile, some residents have urged the state government to collaborate with the NNL to allow free entry to the stadium, enabling more fans to support the home team.
Residents such as John Nwiboko and Celina Nguji shared their excitement over the team’s establishment, calling it a long-overdue move. They praised Governor Nwifuru for his dedication to reviving sports and urged the government to provide sustained support to secure the club’s promotion next season.
“For us, this is a dream come true after over 15 years without professional football in Ebonyi,” Nwiboko remarked. “We appeal to the governor to make the match accessible to all, fostering massive support for our new team.”
With excitement building, the stage is set for an exhilarating start to the NNL season, as Abakaliki FC looks to mark its return to competitive football with a statement victory.
