In a solemn ceremony held at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja, the Nigerian Army bid farewell to 17 of its gallant personnel who tragically lost their lives on March 14 in the line of duty in Okuama community, Delta State.
The fallen heroes, comprising one lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers, were part of the troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, engaged in a peacekeeping mission amidst communal unrest when they met their untimely demise.
Leading the nation in honoring these brave souls, President Bola Tinubu graced the occasion alongside top government officials, service chiefs, and heads of security agencies, paying tribute to their ultimate sacrifice.
Addressing the grieving families, Chief of Army Staff Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja reassured them of the military’s unwavering support, acknowledging the profound loss and hardship faced by the loved ones left behind. With ten widows, including three expectant mothers, and 21 orphans among them, Lagbaja pledged the military’s commitment to caring for their welfare.
In recognition of their valor and dedication to duty, President Tinubu posthumously honored the fallen soldiers, awarding the four ranking officers with the prestigious Member of the Order of Niger (MON) honor, and the remaining 13 officers with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honor.
Furthermore, in a gesture of solidarity and support, Tinubu announced comprehensive assistance measures for the bereaved families. This includes the provision of housing facilities in any part of the country, ensuring a secure future for their surviving members. Additionally, all children of the deceased soldiers will receive scholarships up to the university level, ensuring their educational aspirations are not hindered by the loss of their loved ones.
Expressing the government’s commitment to honoring its fallen heroes, President Tinubu emphasized, “It is now our duty to protect the families of our departed heroes. The Federal Government will provide a house in any part of our country to each of the families of the four officers and 13 soldiers.” He further assured the prompt disbursement of death benefits to the families within 90 days, affirming the nation’s solemn pledge to stand by those who sacrificed their lives for its peace and security.
