AFCON qualifiers: Lookman, Ekong, and five others join Uyo camp for upcoming matches against Benin and Rwanda

Seven Super Eagles players arrived at their camp in Uyo at 10 a.m. on Monday, gearing up for Nigeria’s qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The arriving players are William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Olisa Ndah, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Nigeria is set to face the Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. for their opening Group D match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. This was confirmed in a video posted on the Super Eagles’ X account.

The 2025 AFCON qualification, organized by the Confederation of African Football, will determine the teams that advance to the tournament in Morocco, marking the 35th edition of Africa’s premier men’s football championship.

The qualification process began with the preliminary round from March 21 to 26 and will continue through the group stage matches in September, October, and November 2024.

A total of 24 teams will make it to the final tournament, including the hosts, Morocco, who are automatically qualified.

The Super Eagles are expected to report to their Uyo camp on Monday, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). After finishing as runners-up in the 2024 AFCON held in Ivory Coast, Nigeria is now preparing for the tournament in Morocco, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Following their opening qualifier against Benin Republic, Nigeria will face Rwanda in Kigali three days later.

The NFF announced a 23-man squad for these two fixtures last Tuesday. Augustine Eguavoen, the interim Super Eagles manager succeeding Finidi George, has appointed Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede as his assistants for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The Super Eagles are eager to avenge their 2-1 defeat by Benin Republic on June 10 during the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
