A faction of the renowned Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, under the leadership of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has announced the completion of its blueprint for restructuring Nigeria.
According to the group, their vision for restructuring leans towards adopting a parliamentary system of governance. They argue that this shift would not only drastically reduce the exorbitant costs associated with election campaigns but also significantly slash the expenses of governance, which are currently inflated under the federal system.
Speaking to reporters after a caucus meeting held at Pa Adebanjo’s residence, Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Mogaji Adejumo, revealed that a committee headed by Oba Oladipo Olaitan had compiled the group’s stance on restructuring. Adejumo emphasized that the report would undergo further scrutiny by the association’s executives before being presented to the general assembly for wider dissemination.
Addressing the role of prominent politician Bola Tinubu, Adejumo noted Tinubu’s historical ties to Afenifere and his past efforts in advocating for restructuring. He urged Tinubu, now a key figure in Nigerian politics, to prioritize this agenda, considering his roots in Afenifere’s ideology.
Furthermore, Adejumo hinted at Afenifere’s preference for a parliamentary system, citing its efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to the current presidential model. He drew parallels to the leadership style of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and highlighted the potential benefits of a more localized approach to governance.
In conclusion, Adejumo stressed that embracing a parliamentary system could lead to significant cost savings, allowing for more efficient utilization of resources in running the country.
