Enugu State was plunged into mourning on Saturday following a devastating petroleum tanker accident that resulted in 18 fatalities and left 13 others injured.
According to a statement released by Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash was caused by brake failure and involved 17 vehicles, including a petrol tanker, a water tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
Preliminary reports revealed that the petrol tanker, loaded with premium motor spirit (PMS), lost control due to brake failure. The uncontrolled vehicle collided with other vehicles, triggering a massive fire that engulfed the scene.
Eleven vehicles were reduced to ashes in the inferno. Of the 31 individuals caught in the chaos, emergency responders managed to rescue 10 with varying degrees of injuries, while three escaped without harm. Tragically, 18 victims were burned beyond recognition.

“A total of 31 people were involved in the crash. Ten were rescued with injuries, three escaped unscathed, and sadly, 18 victims were burned beyond recognition,” the statement noted.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed confirmed that the tanker driver lost control after the vehicle’s brakes failed, leading to a collision with 17 other vehicles and sparking the catastrophic fire.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
The rescue operation saw active involvement from Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, alongside top state officials, police, and other security agencies. Efforts to clear the wreckage and redirect traffic on the affected route are ongoing to restore normalcy.
